This is massive complex with multiple pools, spa areas and water slides. If you are a serious swimmer, it is possible to do your normal training. I was there in early August, which is high season, and like most places, at the opening of the complex the regular local swimmers were there, hit the pool for half an hour, and moved on.
As in most pools in Iceland, you are well received by the staff, pay the admission fee with a credit card, and they will direct you to the locker room. The lockers are digital, so there's no key to carry around. You need to wash yourself thoroughly before entering the pool area.
In Iceland the government really made a federal case of having heated, outdoor swimming pools all over the place where you can do your laps and keep in shape while on an Icelandic adventure. You can easily walk from the cruise ship terminal to the Akureyri pool and do your laps in one of the best pools in Iceland.
