October 2021: England Review Finished and New York Under Way
In October 2021 we finished reviewing England and began New York. We explain why private pool admission details were left alone during COVID-19 restrictions, and describe an unusual top-floor infinity pool in Austria.
We finished reviewing England's pool listings in October 2021 and moved straight on to New York, the first of the mid-Atlantic states in the United States. This month's update also explains how we handled private pools while COVID-19 restrictions were in place.
Site activity
As with the listings in the United Kingdom, we did not try to update the admission prices at private pools in New York. COVID-19 restrictions were still in place, and we were concerned that temporary limits at private facilities would become permanent in our database.
The admission information we show for those pools may therefore be out of date. Many private gyms and clubs that do not currently offer drop-in visits are likely to offer them again soon. If we showed them as having no access, you might skip a facility that, six months or a year from now, would welcome you.
For private facility listings, we checked that the facilities are still open, that the website links work and that the contact information is correct.
An infinity pool around a hotel floor
The most unusual pool we came across in October is at the Mooshaus Winterresort in Kühtai, Tirol, Austria. It is an infinity pool that encircles the entire fifth, or top, floor of the resort hotel. The pool is roughly 100 meters long and three or four meters wide.
The fifth floor is rectangular, with two 33-meter sides and two 16-meter sides, so the pool forms a rectangular ring.
The water is kept too warm for vigorous swimming, so we decided not to add the pool to the site. It is a striking design all the same.
Database statistics
In October we added 31 listings, the same number as in September, and deleted 22, for a net gain of nine. Most of the losses were in England, where we had a net loss of 15 listings, the same as in September.
- As of October 31, 2021: 25,631 facilities in 208 countries and 14,222 cities and towns.
- Pools: those facilities have 28,062 full-size, year-round pools, as we define those terms in our FAQ.
