May 2021: England Reviews Resume and a Pool on the 77th Floor
In May 2021 we resumed our systematic review of listings, starting with England, and the directory lost listings for only the second time. Our Pool of the Month is a skyscraper pool at the Address Beach Resort in Dubai.
In May 2021 we went back to work to update pool listings one by one, starting with England. The directory also shrank that month, for only the second time in its history.
Site anniversary
The site passed its 25th anniversary earlier in 2021. Data collection began in 1991, and the site went online five years later with about 3,300 listings.
Site activity
In May we resumed the systematic review of listings that had occupied us for the previous ten or twelve years. The COVID-19 pandemic closures made it practically impossible to reach the operators of listed facilities, because closed facilities were not answering email. Adding a new listing rarely requires contact with an operator, but updating one often does, so for about fourteen months we concentrated on expanding the database.
As facilities reopened, we returned to the county-by-county, city-by-city check of every listing that we had to abandon when pools began closing. In early May we started on England and reviewed nearly 400 of its 1,818 listings. We are done through Hampshire so far.
Many private facilities had not yet reopened to non-members, so we did not seek price updates for them. We are, however, fairly sure that the ones we checked are still operating. We will continue with England until the middle of June, when we expect New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania to have reopened.
