January 2021: About 100 Listings Removed After Chain Bankruptcies
In January 2021 we checked every club in chains that filed for bankruptcy during the COVID-19 shutdowns and deleted about 100 listings. The site's listing count fell for the first time month over month.
Checking clubs that belong to bankrupt chains took much of January 2021, and this pool listings update reports the results. We deleted about 100 listings, and the database shrank for the first time from one month to the next.
Site activity
As planned in our December report, we spent a large part of January checking the listings of individual clubs in chains that filed for bankruptcy protection during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns. We deleted about 100 listings. The 24-Hour Fitness chain lost 56, Gold's Gym lost 25, the New York and Boston Sports Clubs, which share a parent company, lost ten, and California's In-Shape Fitness lost eight.
The checks also turned up a chain that was new to us: Esporta Fitness, a spin-off and expansion of the LA Fitness brand that operates mainly in California, Arizona and Florida. We found significant expansions of the Genesis, EoS and Vasa Fitness brands as well. About twenty Vasa Fitness locations still need checking, and those that qualify will be added in February.
We also added a number of listings on Mauritius and Réunion in the Indian Ocean, and a few more in Germany and France. The new listings did not completely make up for the losses from the bankruptcies.
